Playa del Carmen, day 4: rain, exploring, and planning
11 Jun 2026 | travel family mexicoIn the morning, I convinced Jack to join me for the morning bakery run. We decided to try a different bakery, and 20 min into the walk, it started to rain–and this rain was more like Malaysia rain than Idaho rain. A few minutes later, we were standing against a building watching a torrent of rain make rivers in the streets.
We were invited into the 7-Eleven we were huddling against, and after a few minutes watching the torrent, I noticed a large plastic bag on the floor where supplies were being unloaded. I asked how much I could buy it for and they said I could have it for free! With a large plastic bag for me and our emergency poncho for Jack, we ventured out into the torrent
We walked through rivers in the streets to get to the bakery and picked out breakfast and walked home in the riddens of the storm.
Late in the day, while the kids went to the beach with Becca, I attempted to venture South and West of our AirBnB. After several dead ends, I discovered a hidden walkway through a park into a new neighborhood–and eventually to a tourist trap complete with restaurants, art sales, and a Starbucks. I brought my laptop to write blog posts, but it didn’t strike me as a good place to sit and write, so I walked back and collected blog notes at Casa Del Sol.
With most of the family out of the house, house-keeping finally had an opportunity to check in. I think most guests to the AirBnB are out of the house more than they’re in it, so they don’t get a chance to clean. But we were there most hours of the day because of the littles.
After the beach, the kids came back to jump in the pool while Becca and I nailed down plans for our trip to Chichen Itza. Originally, we thought we’d do a bus or train there, but the timings didn’t work, so we setup a car rental and checked on the prices for tickets and tolls for the journey.
It was good to have a day of exploring and laying low.
